Memorial Service for Weda Maxine Scruggs Freeman, 94, of Tyler will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 10:30 am at University Church of Christ with David Westbrook and Rod Jackson officiating.
Maxine passed away peacefully on Monday, November 25, 2024, in Tyler. She loved her Lord and was an active member of the University Church of Christ.
Maxine was born May 5, 1930, in Jacksonville, Tx to Mary Elizabeth Wilson and John Warner Scruggs. She grew up and went to school in the Mixon/Tecula area of Cherokee county. Being blessed with a confident and spunky nature, she left home at the age of 19, began working and attending Beauty College. Among the places over the years that were honored with her tenacious spirit were the historical Levi Strauss Company, Tyler Day Nursery and the New York Store.
Maxine married Roy Hickman Freeman, Jr. (Ben) on June 3, 1965. They were married until his death in April 1995. They had one child, John Benjamin Freeman. She was quite involved in the schools and the PTA. In 1983, she was awarded Life membership in the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, for her outstanding service in Tyler schools. In addition to this honor, Maxine received her GED and graduated in 1984, one week prior to John's graduation from high school. John recalls that this accomplishment was one of the proudest moments in her life.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers; TD (Tex) Scruggs, Claude Scruggs, and sister, Mary Nell Prieto.
She is survived by her son, John Benjamin Freeman, Tyler, one brother, Billy John (Sandy) Scruggs, of Edom, grandsons, John (Brea) Freeman, Jr., and Thomas (Kaylee) Freeman all of Tyler. Other family members, great-granddaughter, Angel Elizabeth Winchester-Freeman of Kilgore and numerous nieces and nephews. Of course, we cannot forget the most important 4-legged Love of her Life, the past several years - her sweet Rudy.
The family would like to thank the nurses, caregivers and all the staff at The Waterton Healthcare Facility in Tyler. The last months of her life were spent in this top-notch facility. The genuine outpouring of care and love touched not only Maxine but us as well. We were blessed that she found a home away from home.
Celebration of Life and Visitation will be held after the service at Daniel Boone's Restaurant, 1920 E. Southeast Loop 323, Tyler. Lunch will be served.
