Richard "Dick" Lee Sawyer, 91, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. Born on June 10, 1933, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Richard was raised in Central and East Texas, but his heart always belonged to Cowtown, where he proudly considered himself a true Fort Worthian.
Richard was married to the love of his life, Joyce Perry Sawyer, for over 70 years - a true testament to enduring love and commitment. Together, they raised two children, Keith Sawyer (Cheryl) from The Woodlands, TX, and Shirley Cape (David) from Austin, TX. Richard was also a devoted grandfather -Pop Pop- to Kendall Harvey (Kyle) and Cameron Cape, both from Austin, and a proud great-grandfather to Brooks and Collins Harvey.
A proud Navy veteran, Richard served his country with honor. Although his career was headquartered in Chicago, he made the decision to settle and raise his family in Tyler, TX, where he and Joyce put down roots in 1965. In 1994, they moved to Emerald Bay in Bullard, where they enjoyed its peacefulness, and the companionship of lifelong friends. Richard often joked that they would have to carry him out of there "feet first," a reflection of his deep love for the community that became an extension of his family.
Richard lived a long and active life, filled with many passions and pursuits. He was an avid tennis player, sports car enthusiast, sailor, and enthusiastic golfer. He was also a member of the Emerald Bay Community Church, where he enjoyed listening to the choir and fellowship with the congregation.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Richard's memory to Emerald Bay Community Church choir (emeraldbaychurch.org , 160 LaSalle Road, Bullard, TX 75757), Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance - dedicated to Kendall Cape Harvey (curefa.org , 533 W. Uwchlan Ave., Dowington, PA 19335) , or to a charity of your choice.
A private family memorial will be held at a future date to celebrate the life of a man who lived well, loved deeply, and left a lasting legacy.
Richard Lee Sawyer will be remembered for his love for his family, his dedication to his community, and his zest for life.
