Services for Fred Alan Nichols, 76, of Tyler will be held on Saturday, February 15th, at 11:00 am in the chapel of Green Acres Baptist Church, 1607 Troup Hwy, Tyler, Texas 75701 officiated by Chris Cullins and Darryl Flynn. Reception will follow at the Adult Education building. Alan passed away on Saturday, February 8th at Tyler Complete Care.
Alan was born June 21, 1948 in Lubbock, Texas to F. A. and Lois Nichols. He had a long career as a truck driver at various companies in Tyler. In earlier years of marriage, Alan and Dana served as foster parents to several children and also opened their home to exchange students from China. He coached multiple youth sports teams and even played in various adult leagues himself.
After his retirement in 2021, he found his true passion to carryout mission work through Green Acres Baptist Church. During the week he participated in the Texas Ramp Project, building wheelchair ramps for disabled individuals. Over the last four years he participated in international missions in the countries of Africa, Brazil, and Costa Rica.
He was a blessing to so many because of his chatty personality and tight bear hugs. He was known as "Papa", "Papi" and "Pops" by his grandkids who were his pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dana Nichols; parents, F. A. and Lois; brother, Gary and multiple cousins.
He is survived by his son and son-in-law, Jason Nichols and Craig Elmore of Chicago, Illinois; daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Chris Wells of Savannah, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Ashleigh and Chris Cullins of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Alyssa, Rylee, Kinsey, and Camdyn Wells, Hudson, Graham, and Michal Anne Cullins and great grandchild, Lakelynn Gonser. He is also survived by two sisters, Pam Hunt and Jan St. James. Also sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bill Baldree of Tyler.
Pallbearers will be Bill Baldree, Mike Castleberry, Keith Pennington, Walter Ballou, Samuel Sadler, and Dale Boone.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Alan's honor be made to Green Acres Baptist Church Missions Department.
